ECO Fellows

The ECO Fellows Program is a funded, hands-on training program for young leaders who are interested in nature, peace, and collective action for sustainable justice.

The Environmental Community Organising (ECO) Fellowship will involve:

a series of relationship-building online dialogues from November 2026 – February 2027;
a four-day training in Jakarta, Indonesia, on creative facilitation approaches to environmental peacebuilding work;
attendance at NERPS 2027, a major international conference bringing together science & society for environmental peacebuilding research and action (https://nerps.org/nerps2027-conference-in-jakarta/); and
follow-up opportunities for networking, collaboration, and publication.

ECO Fellows are required to commit 5 hours per month from November 2026 – February 2027, and to be in Jakarta, Indonesia for full days from 13-19 March 2027 (i.e., arriving on 12 March and departing on 20 March). Visa costs, round-trip transportation, shared accommodation, training and conference registration fees, and meals will be provided for selected Fellows.

To be eligible for the 2027 ECO Fellows Program, you must:

be an emerging professional (e.g., student, early career researcher, entry-level practitioner, etc.) interested in environmental peacebuilding;
hold a valid passport and be able to travel to Jakarta in March 2027 (ArtPeace: Earth and NERPS will support visa applications, but you must secure a visa and be able to attend in person in order to participate in the ECO Fellows Program);
be able to commit to intensive engagement with the in-person training and conference events from 13-19 March 2027 (approximately 12 hours a day, with breaks provided);
be willing to participate in the pre- and post-conference online programming with the ECO Fellows Cohort.

You are advised to review the entire application before beginning, draft your answers carefully, and avoid repeating the same information in various responses. Be aware that priority will be given to candidates who demonstrate a genuine, active interest in the professional development, skills building, and community development aspects of the program – this is not simply an event scholarship!

Programming: The ECO Fellows Program will intentionally be flexibly designed, modelling relational facilitation techniques. Selected Fellows will be active participants, with plenty of opportunities to share their own experiences and expertise with each other, in addition to learning from established experts. The training is organised by ArtPeace: Earth, and the program is offered in partnership with several generous funders and the Network for Education and Research on Peace and Sustainability.

From November 2026 to February 2027, the selected ECO Fellows and training team will meet several times online for relationship-building dialogues and logistical reviews. These discussions will include:

overviews of key concepts in environmental peacebuilding, creating a shared vocabulary prior to the in-person training;
guidance for all Fellows to propose sessions to the conference, with an audience to practice and help refine their presentations; and
conversations with leaders in the field, to build confidence for networking and consider diverse career paths on these issues.
